The Red River Resistance

On a snowy day in October 1869, a group of nineteen unarmed Métis riders took a major step in changing the course of Manitoba’s history. Confronting a survey crew that was staking out land west of the Red River for the anticipated arrival of Canadian settlers, the Métis stepped on the surveyors’ chain, signaling their intention to oppose the distant Canadian Government’s plan to annex the west for agricultural immigration. It was the beginning of a Resistance and on the same day Métis leader Louis Riel with about 400 followers moved to “Take The Fort” and seized Fort Garry without bloodshed. The Fort would become the home of the provisional government charged with the task of negotiating Manitoba’s entry into confederacy.

Take the Fort is a Métis multi-media variety show which tells the story of the Red River Resistance of 1869 through music, dance, video and interviews with Métis historians. Humourous and historical, this show is fun for the whole family! And it's coming to a city near you!
